Duluth, MN – Frigid air and dangerously low wind chills will grip northern Minnesota tonight, with temperatures plunging well below zero. The National Weather Service warns that wind chills may dip to -20 to -35 across the region, creating frostbite risks within minutes for exposed skin.
According to the US National Weather Service Duluth office, the coldest conditions will arrive early Wednesday morning and continue through Thursday. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, wear layered clothing, and cover all exposed skin if venturing out. The agency advises checking on vulnerable neighbors and ensuring pets are kept indoors during the extreme cold.
Tonight, lake-effect snow along the South Shore is expected to bring 2-5 inches of accumulation, with higher totals of 6-11 inches possible in Iron County, WI. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the area until midnight Wednesday.
The cold snap won’t let up quickly. Subzero wind chills will persist through Friday morning before a gradual warming trend begins this weekend. Daytime highs will remain in the teens through Thursday, but Saturday may offer relief with highs nearing 28°F.
Drivers along US-2 and other regional roads should prepare for blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially Wednesday evening as gusts reach 30 mph.
