Detroit, MI – February begins with a dangerous mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow across Southeast Michigan, making travel conditions hazardous throughout the weekend. Icy roads, reduced visibility, and possible flooding are key concerns as temperatures fluctuate.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain is already moving through the area Saturday morning, with rainfall totals between a half-inch to one inchexpected. With frozen ground and existing snowpack, excessive runoff could lead to localized flooding and ice accumulation, particularly near I-96 and I-69. As temperatures dip, the rain will transition to snow late Saturday night, with up to one inch of accumulation possible.

Five-Day Forecast for Southeast Michigan:

Sunday:Snow and sleet in the morning, followed by freezing rainin the afternoon as a warm front moves in. High near 40°Fwith light winds.

Sunday Night:Cloudy, temperatures dropping to 34°F, with slick roadsremaining a concern.

Monday:Mostly cloudy, high near 40°F. No precipitation, but icy patches likely on untreated roads in the morning.

Tuesday:Partly sunny, high of 31°F, but another round of freezing rainis possible late at night as temperatures drop to 26°F.

Wednesday:Rain likely, especially in the morning. Highs near 38°F, but any lingering ice from previous nights could create hazardous morning commutes.

Safety Precautions:

Drivers should prepare for slick roads, black ice, and reduced visibility this weekend. Salt trucks are expected to be out, but elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses will freeze first. Pedestrians should also be cautious, as sidewalks and driveways may become icy and treacherous.
