Grand Forks, ND – Residents of North Dakota and Minnesota should prepare for a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow Tuesday evening, creating potentially dangerous travel conditions across the region.

The National Weather Service forecasts light snow developing early Tuesday, with precipitation intensifying in the evening. A mix of freezing rain and snow is expected, particularly near the Minnesota-North Dakota border and along major routes like Highway 2. Daytime highs will reach 28°F before temperatures drop into the low teens overnight, bringing wind chills as low as -10°F.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution during commutes and stay updated on weather alerts as conditions could deteriorate rapidly. The heaviest snow accumulations are likely in northern Minnesota, with roadways in both states becoming icy.

Monday’s Conditions

Monday will remain quiet but cold, with partly sunny skies and a high near 14°F. Winds from the north will make temperatures feel closer to -12°F. Overnight, lows will dip into the single digits, setting the stage for Tuesday’s incoming system.

Tuesday’s Storm

Tuesday morning will see light snow spreading across the region, followed by freezing rain and increased snowfall intensity in the evening. Snow totals will vary, but roads are expected to become slick as freezing rain coats surfaces. Winds from the south could gust up to 23 mph, further reducing visibility.

Looking Ahead

By Wednesday, the storm will move out, leaving partly sunny skies but blustery conditions. Highs will peak at 23°F, while lows fall to -5°F overnight. Thursday will remain frigid, with highs near 6°F, before slightly warmer temperatures return Friday with a chance of snow.

Residents should limit travel where possible, prepare for icy conditions, and monitor updates for storm developments.
