Caribou, ME – A mild end to December will take a sharp turn as freezing conditions and accumulating snow impact Maine through New Year’s week. Tonight, temperatures will dip below freezing, leading to a risk of black ice and patchy freezing fog. Motorists on I-95 and surrounding roadways are urged to exercise caution, particularly after 10 p.m. when freezing drizzle is expected.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, low-pressure systems moving into the region will bring rain and snow beginning early Wednesday. The heaviest accumulations, up to two inches, are likely west of I-95, with northern areas experiencing slick conditions. Temperatures Wednesday are forecast to reach a high of 36°F before dropping into the low 30s by evening.

By Thursday, snow is expected to intensify with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches possible across northern and central regions. Winds gusting up to 24 mph may create hazardous travel conditions. Friday will bring some reprieve with mostly cloudy skies and a high of 22°F, though scattered snow showers could continue into the weekend.

Residents are advised to monitor updates and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Those traveling for New Year’s should allow extra time and carry emergency supplies.
