Kankakee, IL – A free online event on Wednesday will focus on reducing light pollution in Kankakee County and across Illinois. Hosted by the University of Illinois Extension, this Wilderness Wednesday webinar aims to educate the public on light pollution’s impact and explore simple ways to mitigate it.
According to event organizers, the session will begin at 6 p.m. and feature Amy Lefringhouse, an expert in environmental science. Lefringhouse will provide insights on how excessive artificial light affects natural habitats, human health, and the visibility of stars. Attendees will learn practical tips for assessing their local light conditions and implementing changes that support darker night skies.
The webinar is part of a broader series designed to engage the community in conservation efforts. Topics previously covered include bumblebee conservation and owl species preservation. The event series is supported by the Kankakee River Valley Forest Preserve District.
Community members interested in preserving the night sky are encouraged to participate and can register on the University of Illinois Extension website.
