Fort Worth, TX – Drivers across North Texas could hit heavy downpours and lightning by the Wednesday afternoon commute, as storm coverage ramps up along I-35W and I-20 following several days of unseasonable warmth.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, afternoon highs will run 10 to 20 degrees above normal into early next week, climbing into the upper 70s and low to mid-80s across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Rain chances begin increasing Tuesday, with the most widespread showers and thunderstorms expected Wednesday through Friday. Rain probabilities rise as high as 70 percent by Wednesday.
The combination of warmth and moisture could fuel a few strong to severe storms, particularly during the peak heating hours Wednesday afternoon and evening. Corridors along I-30, US-287 and Loop 820 may experience brief torrential rain, gusty winds and cloud-to-ground lightning. Ponding on roadways is possible where heavy rain falls in a short period, especially in low-lying areas of Tarrant County.
Communities from Arlington to Denton and south toward Burleson should prepare for shifting conditions each afternoon. Outdoor events may face lightning delays, and drivers should expect slower travel during heavier cells.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor local alerts and avoid driving through water-covered roads. Charge devices in advance of storms in case isolated outages occur.
Storm chances remain elevated through Friday night, with additional updates likely as confidence grows in timing and severity.
