Fort Wayne, IN — A Fort Wayne woman was taken into custody Friday morning following a police investigation involving an infant who suffered serious injuries earlier this month.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were first called to a local Fort Wayne hospital on Thursday, December 11, after an infant arrived with serious injuries. Detectives from the department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit began an investigation shortly after.

Police say that following a thorough review of evidence, investigators identified Emily Duran, 27, as the suspect in the case. On Friday, December 19, detectives located Duran through a joint effort between the Crimes Against Persons Unit and the Gang & Violent Crimes Unit.

Authorities say Duran was taken into custody without incident around 10:56 a.m. near 100 W. Superior Street in Fort Wayne. She was later transported to the Allen County Jail, where she remains held pending further court proceedings.

According to police, Duran has been preliminarily charged with one count of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 3 felony, and one count of Battery to a Child Under 14 by a Person at Least 18 Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, also a Level 3 felony.

Police emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. No additional details about the infant’s condition or relationship to the suspect were released.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
