Cumming, GA – A juvenile is facing felony charges after a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputy located a loaded firearm during a traffic stop on the campus of West Forsyth High School, authorities confirmed Monday.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Monday, January 12, when a deputy followed a vehicle reported as stolen onto the school campus. The deputy initiated a traffic stop in a parking lot at West Forsyth High School.
Officials said two passengers immediately fled the vehicle on foot, while the driver attempted to drive away but was unable to due to congestion in the parking lot. As the deputy tried to remove the driver from the vehicle, the driver allegedly physically assaulted the deputy before fleeing on foot.
The deputy was able to detain the remaining passenger. While handcuffing the juvenile, authorities said the individual repeatedly reached toward their waistband. A loaded 9mm handgun then fell from the student’s pants to the ground, according to officials.
The driver and one fleeing passenger have since been identified and are expected to face charges. Authorities are still working to identify the second individual who fled the scene.
The juvenile found in possession of the firearm has been charged with one felony count of possession of a weapon on educational property, under North Carolina General Statute 14-269.2, and is being held at the Alexander Youth Detention Facility.
“There is no place for weapons on school campuses,” Sheriff’s officials said in a statement, adding that the incident did not result in injuries and was quickly brought under control.
The investigation remains ongoing.
