Will County, IL – Stargazing, paddling, and nature walks are just a few of the engaging activities planned this week across the Forest Preserve District of Will County.
Residents and visitors are invited to explore the natural beauty of the area through a series of free and low-cost programs designed for all ages. Highlights include the popular “Perseids in the Preserves,” scheduled for Monday, August 11 from 8 to 11 p.m. at Forked Creek Preserve near Wilmington and Whalon Lake in Naperville. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and snacks to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower and roast marshmallows under the stars.
According to the Forest Preserve District, nature lovers can also participate in the “McKinley to McKinley Paddle and Hike” on Tuesday, August 12 and Wednesday, August 13, which includes a two-hour paddle on the Des Plaines River and a 2.5-mile hike. The $20 program is open to those age 14 and older, with registration required by Friday, August 8.
Other events during the week include the literary-themed trail walk “These Books Are Made for Walkin'” on Tuesday, August 12 from 6 to 7 p.m., and a trio of “Summer Finale” events from Wednesday to Friday at the Four Rivers Environmental Education Center. “Science Day” is Wednesday, August 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., “Art Day” follows on Thursday, August 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and “Explorer Day” wraps up the week on Friday, August 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Additional programming includes “Bat Night for Adults” on Friday, August 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hammel Woods in Shorewood, a Saturday morning “Dragonfly Hike” on August 16 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and Sunday afternoon “Collages and Conversations” on August 17 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville.
Many events are free, but some require registration by early next week. Participants are encouraged to sign up via the Forest Preserve’s Event Calendar at ReconnectWithNature.org.
