Melbourne, Florida – Dangerous heat and scattered afternoon thunderstorms will combine to create hazardous conditions across east central Florida Saturday, with the greatest storm coverage expected from Orlando southward. Heat index values are forecast to reach 109 degrees in parts of the region while a moderate risk of rip currents continues at Atlantic beaches.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon, with the highest coverage from Orlando south to the Treasure Coast. Storms will be capable of producing frequent lightning, gusty winds, and locally heavy rainfall, while many locations away from storms climb into the low to upper 90s.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect for Volusia, Lake, Seminole, Orange, and Brevard counties, where peak heat index values could reach 109 degrees. Forecast highs include 97 degrees in Leesburg, 96 in Orlando, 92 in Daytona Beach, 92 in Melbourne, 91 in Vero Beach, and 92 in Port St. Lucie.
Communities including Orlando, Melbourne, Daytona Beach, Titusville, Kissimmee, Leesburg, Vero Beach, and Port St. Lucie should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas. Outdoor activities are best scheduled before late morning or after late afternoon.
Beachgoers should also exercise caution, as a moderate risk of rip currents continues along all east central Florida beaches. Swim only near staffed lifeguards and never enter the water alone.
