Miami, Fla. – Drivers in South Florida could face hazardous travel Friday evening as thunderstorms roll through Miami with heavy downpours. The National Weather Service warns of potential flooding on I-95 and U.S. 1, along with dangerous lightning. Residents are urged to limit non-essential travel and secure outdoor items before storms hit.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms become likely after 5 p.m. Friday, September 12, with an 80% chance of storms lingering into the night. Showers will continue Saturday with strong downpours possible, making driving treacherous on major routes like I-95, the Palmetto Expressway, and U.S. 1. Heat will remain a factor, with Friday’s high near 87° and a heat index climbing into the triple digits before storms develop.

Localized flooding may slow evening commutes, and scattered power outages are possible with stronger cells. Miami-Dade and Broward residents should prepare for sudden road closures and plan extra travel time. Beachgoers should also avoid the water during thunderstorms due to lightning risks.

By Sunday, partly sunny skies may return, but isolated thunderstorms remain possible. East winds will push more moisture inland, keeping conditions unstable through early next week. While severe weather is not guaranteed, heavy rain and flooding remain possible in low-lying areas.

Warnings could be extended if storms remain strong into Saturday night. Residents are advised to monitor updates and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
