Tallahassee, Florida – Residents across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend should prepare for several days of dangerous heat beginning Monday, while beachgoers along the Gulf Coast face life-threatening rip current conditions through at least Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the hottest stretch of weather arrives Monday through Wednesday, when afternoon highs climb into the mid-90s to near 102 degrees with heat index values between 105 and 115 degrees. Heat advisories are likely during the period as oppressive humidity combines with soaring temperatures, and a few daily record highs could be challenged.
The dangerous heat will affect communities including Tallahassee, Panama City, Apalachicola, Perry, Valdosta, Bainbridge, Dothan, Albany and Cross City. Forecasters urge residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, spend time in air-conditioned buildings when possible and check on elderly neighbors, young children and pets.
Along the Gulf Coast, a High Risk of Rip Currents remains in effect for the beaches of Walton, Bay and Gulf counties through at least Monday. According to the National Weather Service, life-threatening rip currents are likely with surf of 2 to 3 feet. Beachgoers are strongly urged to stay out of the water where red flags are flying, as rip currents can quickly pull even experienced swimmers away from shore.
While the Gulf may appear inviting during the heat, water conditions will not provide a safe escape from the dangerous weather. Officials recommend heeding all beach warning flags and avoiding swimming unless beaches are staffed by lifeguards.
The heat is expected to peak through Wednesday before conditions begin to moderate later in the week. Additional heat advisories and beach hazard statements may be issued as the prolonged stretch of hot weather continues.
