Orlando, Florida – Fires could spread out of control within minutes after 3 p.m. Sunday as gusty northwest winds and falling humidity create critical wildfire conditions across East Central Florida.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Sunday until midnight Sunday night for Volusia, Lake, Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. Northwest winds will increase to around 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, while relative humidity drops to between 30 and 45 percent. A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Monday, when humidity could fall as low as 20 to 30 percent with gusts of 20 to 25 mph.
Across the I-4 corridor, including Orlando and Sanford, dry vegetation combined with wind could allow any spark to spread rapidly. Inland Volusia and Lake counties face heightened risk near wooded and brush-heavy areas, while coastal Volusia may see fast-moving grass fires.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes and secure trailer chains that could spark along roadways. Equipment that generates heat or sparks should be used with caution.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected to peak late Sunday afternoon and could redevelop Monday. Additional warnings may be issued if humidity drops further or winds strengthen.
