Tampa, FL – A 6-year-old girl was killed and her mother and brother were injured Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking to school in northwest Tampa, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the crash around 7:38 a.m. at the intersection of Mohr Road and Sheldon Road. Authorities say the family of three was crossing in a marked pedestrian crosswalk when a vehicle driven by 77-year-old Isain Ledesma allegedly struck them while turning onto Sheldon Road.

According to the sheriff’s office, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother and her 10-year-old son were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Ledesma was also hospitalized and later cited for a violation of the right of way resulting in death.

Sheriff Chad Chronister called the incident “an unimaginable tragedy,” urging drivers to stay alert around schools. “This is a heartbreaking reminder that every second behind the wheel carries responsibility, especially when children are walking to school,” he said.

Authorities confirmed the family was crossing lawfully when hit. Deputies continue to investigate the crash.
