Sebring, Fla. – Afternoon storms could sweep through Florida’s eastern interior today, bringing gusty winds, lightning, and a chance of hail, with Highlands County facing the highest risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather is in effect through Thursday evening, mainly for areas in Highlands County. Storms could produce gusts of up to 40–50 mph and small hail, especially during peak heating hours.

The most affected areas include Sebring, Avon Park, and parts of the Lake Placid region. Residents in these zones should remain alert for fast-moving thunderstorms that may cause brief power disruptions and hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service estimates a 5% chance for both damaging wind and hail development.

High temperatures across the region are expected to climb into the upper 80s to lower 90s, fueling storm activity. Drivers are urged to use caution on wet roads, secure outdoor items, and stay indoors during thunderstorm activity.

The storm threat will diminish by late evening, but additional updates may follow if conditions escalate. Stay tuned to NOAA weather alerts and local emergency channels for the latest warnings.
