Tampa, Florida – Interior Florida could see strong to severe storms by mid-afternoon Monday, with large hail and damaging wind gusts posing the greatest risk across Highlands and eastern Polk counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) is in place for the central and southern interior of the peninsula, with activity expected to ramp up through late afternoon and early evening. Forecasters say the main threats include large hail, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

Storms will likely remain isolated, with most activity forming along and east of the I-75 corridor as sea breeze boundaries push inland. Areas like Sebring, Lake Wales, and Bartow may see brief but intense cells. The severe risk should diminish after sunset as instability wanes.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in strong winds, and avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours. Motorists should remain alert for sudden downpours and hazardous wind gusts.

Conditions are expected to return to typical May warmth Tuesday, but additional storm chances could return later this week.
