St. Louis, MO – A flood watch is now in effect for parts of southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois due to heavy rain expected tonight. The National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis has warned that severe thunderstorms may develop, potentially leading to localized flash flooding.

According to the NWS, the heaviest rainfall and strongest storms are anticipated to occur overnight into early Tuesday morning. The affected areas include northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois, with the possibility of the storms reaching as far south as Interstate 70. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as damaging winds up to 60 mph and heavy rain could result in hazardous conditions.

A low threat of damaging wind is expected to persist throughout most of the area today, with severe storms predicted to peak this afternoon. The flood watch is set to begin at 7 PM tonight and will remain in effect until 7 AM Wednesday.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, localized flash flooding poses a significant risk. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads. The NWS stresses the importance of having a way to receive warnings and to take immediate action if flooding is observed.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to remain unsettled through midweek. Wednesday will bring a 45% chance of rain with temperatures reaching 85 degrees. The rest of the week is forecasted to be cooler and dry, with temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the low 80s.
