Central Illinois – Flash flooding remains a threat in several Illinois counties early Monday morning as heavy rainfall continues to soak the region. Areas already impacted by more than 2 inches of rain overnight are at risk for additional flooding through noon Monday, as up to 1 more inch of rain is possible.
According to the National Weather Service, the counties affected by this flood watch include Shelby, Cumberland, Effingham, Jasper, Crawford, Clay, Richland, and Lawrence. Flash flooding could lead to significant impacts on rivers, streams, and low-lying areas, including the flooding of roads and streets.
Effingham, Shelbyville, and Lawrenceville could see street flooding, with low-water crossings and creeks also at risk. Those in the affected areas should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly if Flash Flood Warnings are issued.
Local agencies are urging residents to stay alert and avoid traveling through flooded roadways. As more rain continues to fall, the situation could worsen rapidly, leading to potentially dangerous flooding.
The flood watch is expected to remain in effect until noon CDT today. Stay tuned for further updates and be ready to take action if conditions worsen.
