Charleston, WV – Heavy rainfall overnight has led to flooding concerns across portions of southeastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue multiple flood warnings.
According to the NWS Charleston office, small stream flooding is ongoing or imminent in Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Vinton, and Washington counties in Ohio, as well as Wood County in West Virginia. The flood warning remains in effect until 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain have fallen, causing streams and creeks to overflow, impacting roads and low-lying areas.
In Kanawha County, West Virginia, another flood warning is in place until 4 p.m. Thursday. The region has received between 2 and 3 inches of rain, resulting in rising water levels along streams and creeks. Flooding has been reported in Charleston, South Charleston, Dunbar, and several surrounding communities.
Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid flooded roads and exercise caution. The NWS advises, “Turn around, don’t drown,” as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
