Flagstaff, Ariz. – Northern Arizona begins the week with sunshine and mild mountain air, but scattered thunderstorms are set to return by Tuesday and Wednesday. Travelers along I-40 and residents across Coconino County should prepare for changing conditions midweek.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday will stay mostly sunny with a high near 78°F. Monday follows with highs near 79°F under dry skies. By Tuesday, a 20 percent chance of storms develops in the afternoon, with additional storm chances continuing through Wednesday and Thursday.

While widespread rainfall is not expected, storms that do develop could bring brief downpours, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning to high terrain and canyon areas. Outdoor plans such as hiking in the San Francisco Peaks or visiting Walnut Canyon should be monitored closely for changing weather.

The NOAA precipitation outlook keeps Arizona in a near-normal zone through mid-September, suggesting this week’s scattered storms will be more about timing and location than widespread flooding risk. Still, quick-hitting mountain thunderstorms can disrupt travel and reduce visibility along I-40 and U.S. 89.

By Friday, storm chances taper slightly, though partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s will remain the theme. Clearer conditions are expected into next weekend.
