Chicago, IL – Snow and rain are set to sweep across Illinois tonight, creating slippery conditions on major roadways, including I-55. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for slushy accumulations and potential delays as the area braces for its first measurable snow of the season.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, wet snow will begin late Wednesday evening and intensify into Thursday morning, particularly during the mid-morning commute. Drivers should anticipate reduced visibility, slush-covered roads, and slippery travel, especially on untreated surfaces and bridges. Wind gusts up to 30 mph could further impact road safety.

By Thursday afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise, leading to rain and melting of accumulated snow. However, motorists are urged to drive cautiously throughout the day, as lingering slush and wet surfaces may continue to pose hazards.

A lake-effect system near Lake Michigan will also bring additional snow showers on Friday morning, especially for areas closer to the shoreline. Meanwhile, the weekend looks more stable, with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-40s.

Five-Day Forecast:

• Thursday: Rain/snow mix in the morning; turning to rain by afternoon. High of 44°F. Gusts up to 30 mph.

• Friday: Partly sunny with lingering lake-effect snow near Lake Michigan. High of 44°F. Breezy.

• Saturday: Mostly sunny and calm. High of 45°F.

• Sunday: Mostly cloudy with highs near 50°F.

• Monday: Dry and mild. High of 52°F.

Residents should prepare for delays tonight and plan extra time for Thursday morning travel. Stay updated through official weather sources for changing conditions.
