Indianapolis, IN – An 82-year-old Indianapolis man narrowly avoided injury after a fire broke out in his home Thursday evening when a fireplace log rolled out and ignited nearby materials.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the incident occurred at a home on the 4500 block of West 26th Street. The man attempted to extinguish the growing blaze with a fire extinguisher but was forced to flee the house as the fire spread.
Firefighters responded to multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke and flames around 5:14 p.m. Crews quickly established defensive operations and ensured all occupants were safely outside before extinguishing the flames. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.
The man was evaluated by Indianapolis EMS at the scene and declined further treatment. Officials confirmed he will stay with relatives.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was determined to be accidental.
