North Platte, NE – Intense heat and high winds are expected to elevate fire weather concerns across western Nebraska this week. Temperatures will reach the 90s through Wednesday, up to 15 degrees above normal for September. Residents are urged to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), winds will increase by Wednesday, with gusts exceeding 40 mph by Thursday. Combined with low humidity, this could rapidly spread any fires that ignite. The NWS is warning residents to exercise extreme caution with open flames, dispose of cigarettes responsibly, and ensure grills are completely extinguished.

Fire weather outlooks for Wednesday and Thursday indicate high-risk areas across much of western Nebraska, including North Platte and the I-80 corridor. The NWS advises following all fire safety guidelines until conditions improve.
