Louisville, KY – An explosion and fire erupted Monday afternoon at a Louisville food coloring plant, prompting officials to issue a shelter-in-place order within a one-mile radius. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Givaudan Sense Colour, located on the 1900 block of Payne Street, east of downtown.

According to Louisville Metro Emergency Services, emergency crews quickly blocked nearby streets to secure the area, urging residents to avoid the location. Fire officials described it as a “large-scale incident,” involving hazardous materials, leading to evacuations within a two-block radius.

Louisville Fire Department confirmed injuries from the explosion, though the number remains unspecified. First responders rescued two individuals from the building, one of whom required additional assistance. Nearby businesses on Frankfort Avenue, including Quills Coffee and Osaka Japanese restaurant, reported property damage from the blast.

The Louisville Fire Department, along with Metro EMS, remains on-site to assess risks and control any hazardous material threats. Officials continue to advise residents within the affected area to remain indoors.
