Ann Arbor, MI – Early Wednesday morning, a structure fire broke out in a three-story building in the 800 block of Monroe Street. Firefighters arrived at 1:42 a.m. and quickly tackled the flames in a kitchen on the second floor. The building, subdivided into student apartments, sustained smoke damage throughout.
According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, initial reports suggested possible trapped individuals, but firefighters found no one inside. The blaze was contained to the second floor, preventing more extensive damage. Two occupants were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The property, owned by the University of Michigan, is currently under investigation by the university. The fire is believed to have started unintentionally, but officials continue to examine the exact cause.
Authorities remind residents to ensure their smoke detectors are operational. Cooking while tired is also discouraged, as it may increase fire risks. This incident underscores the importance of fire safety and working alarms in residential areas.
