Chicago, IL – A dangerous Arctic blast will hit Illinois Sunday night, plunging temperatures to sub-zero levels and bringing wind chills as low as -25°F. The bitter cold is expected to persist through Wednesday morning, creating a hazardous environment for outdoor activities and travel.

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday night into Monday morning will bring the coldest conditions, with wind chills dipping below -20°F in many areas, including Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Commuters traveling along the I-90 corridor are urged to exercise caution, as frostbite can occur within minutes in these conditions. Officials recommend limiting outdoor exposure, dressing in layers, and keeping an emergency kit in vehicles.

The extreme cold poses additional risks to area rivers and streams, where rapid ice formation may lead to ice jams and localized flooding. The Illinois Department of Transportation advises drivers to monitor road conditions, particularly near bridges and overpasses, which may freeze quickly.

The extended forecast shows frigid temperatures continuing into early Tuesday, with some relief expected by midweek. Highs will remain in the single digits through Tuesday, rising to the low 20s by Wednesday afternoon. However, wind chills will remain below zero through Tuesday morning.

Residents are urged to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members, as well as take precautions to protect pets and pipes from freezing. For updates on local conditions and detailed safety resources, visit weather.gov/Chicago.
