Arlington Heights, IL – A powerful explosion from a garbage truck rocked an Arlington Heights neighborhood Thursday, injuring three people and damaging several homes.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Derbyshire Lane when a Groot Waste Management truck powered by compressed natural gas burst into flames. The resulting blast sent debris flying, injuring two police officers and one firefighter. All were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
The explosion caused substantial damage to nearby homes, blowing off siding, shattering windows, and scattering truck parts across multiple blocks. A shock wave also activated airbags in a parked police vehicle. Arlington Heights Fire Department crews quickly contained the flames, while neighboring police and fire departments assisted with traffic control.
Euclid Avenue and nearby streets were closed during the cleanup but reopened by 10 p.m. Residents experiencing property damage are urged to contact Arlington Heights police at 847-368-5300 for assistance.
