SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) invites residents to enjoy eagle-watching events across the state this winter. These events take place in January and February, offering prime opportunities to witness majestic bald eagles in their natural habitats.
Winter provides the best viewing, as bald eagles flock to Illinois for its open waterways. With over 3,000 bald eagles, Illinois hosts more wintering eagles than any state outside Alaska.
State parks such as Starved Rock and Pere Marquette feature guided programs, binocular tours, and educational opportunities. IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie encourages residents to enjoy the outdoors. “Illinois offers breathtaking views of eagles soaring above scenic river bluffs and waterways,” she said.
Highlights include Pere Marquette Bald Eagle Days in Grafton and the Starved Rock Eagle Watch Weekend in Utica. Other locations include the Mississippi River Visitor Center in Rock Island and Crab Orchard Refuge in Marion.
