Elmhurst: Senior Citizen Victim of Beating and Robbery, Three Suspects Held

Elmhurst, IL – Three individuals, including two juveniles, have been detained following an alleged attack and robbery of a senior citizen in Elmhurst. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred on January 9, 2024. Marie Velez, 40, and two minors, aged twelve and fifteen, are facing severe charges, including robbery and aggravated battery in a public place.

Elmhurst Police Department reports state that the attack took place on Grand Avenue near the I-290 overpass. The victim, a 63-year-old man, was found in his vehicle with injuries to his head and face. It is alleged that Velez and the juveniles initiated the attack after stopping the victim’s car. The suspects were later apprehended at the Extended Stay America hotel.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned the attack, highlighting the serious nature of the charges. Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael McLean expressed alarm at the involvement of minors in such a violent act. The court has scheduled Velez’s arraignment for February 5, 2024, and the juveniles will appear on January 16, 2024.
