Elmhurst, Ill. — The Elmhurst Park District had a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, June 20, to celebrate the reopening of The Hub playground at Berens Park, the District shared today.

The playground was first built in 2004 as part of a larger redevelopment plan for Berens Park at the time. Last July, a public input meeting was held with plans to redesign The Hub for future rebuilding. Following the meeting and a “Party in the Park” event, staff created two playground concepts. They presented the designs to the community for feedback through an online survey. The final design was shaped by the survey and approved by the Park Board in November 2024.

The new playground features equipment designed for all ages and abilities, the District said. It includes a merry-go-round, zip-line and tire swing as a few of the new featured elements. Other improvements added new seating and shaded picnic areas as well as new landscaping throughout the park.

Park Board Commissioners, District staff and the community commemorated the completion of the playground on Friday. The Hub playground at Berens Park is one of the most popular in the Elmhurst Park District, located near Wagner Community Center. The District wrote that the park is now “ready to serve a new generation of families and play-seekers for years to come.”
