Danbury, North Carolina — Hazardous travel conditions are expected across parts of north-central North Carolina as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Stokes, Rockingham, and Caswell counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the advisory runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 10 a.m. Thursday. Precipitation is expected to transition from rain to light snow and freezing drizzle Wednesday evening as temperatures fall below freezing overnight.
Forecasters expect up to one inch of snow accumulation, along with a trace of ice on exposed surfaces. While snowfall amounts will remain light, even minor ice accumulation can significantly increase the risk of slick travel conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
Communities affected include Danbury, Eden, and Yanceyville, along with surrounding rural areas. Travel impacts are most likely along US-311, US-29, NC-86, US-158, and NC-8, where rapidly changing road conditions may develop overnight.
The National Weather Service notes that temperatures will drop quickly after sunset, allowing moisture from earlier rainfall to freeze. As a result, icy patches may form before snow becomes noticeable, increasing the risk of accidents during the overnight hours and Thursday morning commute.
While widespread closures are not anticipated, drivers should be prepared for slower travel speeds, longer stopping distances, and reduced traction. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps where thin ice may be difficult to detect.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid sudden braking. Road condition updates for North Carolina are available by calling 511.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Thursday morning as temperatures rise above freezing.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from weather.gov/rnk and official National Weather Service channels for any changes in timing or impacts.
