Fort Wayne, Indiana — Wintry conditions are expected to linger across northern Indiana through the end of the week, bringing periods of light snow, freezing drizzle, and brief travel impacts.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, cloudy skies will persist as a weak weather system introduces light snow Thursday afternoon into Friday. Forecasters note that freezing drizzle is possible Thursday evening, which could create slick spots on untreated roads even before snow begins.
Snowfall amounts are expected to remain modest, but 1 to 2 inches of accumulation is possible by Friday, especially across areas east of Interstate 69. Light lake-effect snow may also contribute to localized totals. Gusty winds Friday could lead to brief reductions in visibility during heavier snow showers.
Daytime high temperatures will remain below normal through Thursday, with highs generally in the 20s, before rebounding closer to seasonal averages on Friday, when highs reach the low to mid-30s. Despite slightly warmer air, road surfaces may remain cold enough for snow and ice to accumulate.
Impacted travel corridors include I-69 near Fort Wayne, I-80/90 through South Bend and Elkhart, US-30, US-20, and several state highways across the region. Bridges, overpasses, and rural roads are most susceptible to becoming slick, particularly Thursday night and early Friday.
Colder air returns Saturday, with highs dropping back into the teens and lower 20s, though widespread snowfall is not expected. Some flurries may linger into the weekend.
For commuters, students, and delivery drivers, Thursday evening and the Friday morning commute present the highest risk for minor travel disruptions. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for icy patches.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from weather.gov/iwx as small changes in temperature could affect precipitation type and impacts.
