Spokane, Washington – Gusty winds sweeping across Eastern Washington this afternoon could accelerate the spread of new wildfires, particularly in dry and fire-prone areas west of Spokane.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, wind gusts between 20 to 35 mph are expected through 8 p.m. Thursday across much of central and eastern Washington. While not as intense as Wednesday’s winds, today’s conditions remain hazardous due to ongoing dryness and warming temperatures.

Communities from Wenatchee to Colville and into the Spokane metro area could see peak gusts pushing 30 mph. Areas near Yakima and the Columbia Basin are also under elevated fire risk. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid activities that could ignite fires, such as yard burning or using power tools in grassy areas.

Officials warn that even small fire starts may spread rapidly under these gusty conditions. The combination of wind and low humidity creates ideal circumstances for wildfires to grow out of control.

Gusty winds are expected to ease after sunset, but dry conditions will persist into the weekend. Additional fire weather alerts could be issued if winds return Friday or Saturday.
