Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania – Dangerously cold conditions will move into the Pocono region Friday evening, with biting wind chills creating a serious risk for anyone outdoors overnight and into early Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from 7 PM Friday until 10 AM EST Saturday for Carbon and Monroe counties. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as 20 degrees below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
The warning impacts Stroudsburg, Jim Thorpe, and surrounding communities across the Poconos. Emergency officials warn that unprotected skin can quickly become vulnerable to frostbite during prolonged exposure, especially overnight when temperatures reach their lowest point.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the warning period. Those who must go outside should wear multiple insulated layers, hats, gloves, and face coverings. Homeowners are also advised to protect plumbing by wrapping exposed pipes or allowing faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing.
Pets should be brought indoors, and anyone without reliable heat or shelter is encouraged to call 211 for assistance locating warming shelters. The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through 10 AM Saturday, with conditions expected to slowly improve later in the morning.
