Boonville, New York – Dangerously cold air will settle into northern Oneida County Friday evening, bringing biting wind chills that pose a serious risk to anyone spending time outdoors overnight and into early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from 7 PM Friday until 10 AM EST Saturday for northern Oneida County. Wind chills are expected to plunge as low as 30 degrees below zero, creating conditions where frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The warning specifically impacts Boonville and surrounding northern Oneida County communities. Emergency officials caution that the coldest conditions are expected overnight, when temperatures and wind combine to create the most hazardous exposure risks.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the warning period. Those who must go outside should wear insulated layers, hats, gloves, and face coverings to protect exposed skin. Pets should be brought indoors, and extra checks are encouraged for elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable heat.

Portable heaters should be used safely, and generators or grills should never be operated indoors. The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through 10 AM Saturday, with gradual improvement expected later in the morning.
