Wilmington, NC – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood watch for Wilmington and surrounding areas in Eastern North Carolina as heavy rainfall continues to pose significant flood risks. The watch remains in effect through 10 PM tonight, with forecasters warning of an increased likelihood of flash flooding due to saturated soils.
According to the NWS, rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches have already been recorded since Tuesday across the region, with localized amounts exceeding 10 inches in some river basins. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with higher localized amounts, is expected through Monday evening, keeping the threat of flash flooding high.
Wilmington and other cities like Jacksonville and Lumberton are at risk, especially in low-lying areas and near river basins where flooding is already occurring. The cold front stalled over the area is expected to remain in place, bringing further scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Residents are urged to stay informed and avoid driving through flooded roads. River flooding is anticipated along the Tar, Neuse, Cape Fear, Trent, and New Rivers, which could exacerbate the flooding situation in the coming days.
