MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Heavy rain and dangerous surf are battering the North Carolina coast as a slow-moving coastal storm intensifies through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Morehead City warns of continued coastal flooding, hazardous rip currents, and strong northeast winds through Sunday night. Local officials urge residents and visitors to avoid flood-prone roads and limit beach access until conditions improve.
According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Advisory and Beach Hazards Statement remain in effect until at least 8 a.m. Monday. Up to two feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying coastal and soundside areas, including Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, and the Outer Banks. Rip currents are especially strong near piers and inlets, creating life-threatening swimming conditions.
High surf and rough seas are expected to cause beach erosion and localized property damage along coastal highways, including U.S. 70 near Morehead City and N.C. 12 through the Outer Banks. Drivers should use alternate inland routes where possible. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, check local tide schedules, and monitor NWS updates for changing conditions.
By early next week, drier and calmer weather will return to the Crystal Coast, bringing sunshine and milder Fall conditions—ideal for late-season beach walks and pumpkin patch visits once flooding risks subside.
