WILMINGTON, N.C. – Streets near the Cape Fear River could see standing water and traffic delays Friday as a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through 4 p.m., with forecasters warning of minor flooding in low-lying neighborhoods. The National Weather Service said high tide will push water levels up to one foot above normal along riverfront streets, including parts of Battleship Road, Water Street, and River Road. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded lanes and not to drive around barricades.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the advisory covers much of inland New Hanover County, including downtown Wilmington, where minor flooding was already being observed during early morning high tides. Flooding is most likely near the lower Cape Fear River, especially south of River Road Park and Route 133 near Mallory Creek. Officials caution that water levels could rise again during the next high tide cycle later this evening.
The National Weather Service said several rounds of light showers are expected through Saturday, with improving conditions by Sunday. Northeast winds between 10 and 20 mph may contribute to lingering water buildup near tidal creeks. Residents are advised to protect flood-prone property, secure outdoor decorations, and allow extra travel time around midday high tide.
Drier, sunnier weather returns early next week, bringing mild fall temperatures ideal for pumpkin patches and outdoor events heading into mid-October.
