Newport, North Carolina – Drivers across eastern North Carolina face rapidly changing conditions today as a cold front pushes through between late morning and early evening, bringing strong wind gusts and scattered thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the front will move through between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, with isolated to scattered showers and storms developing along it. Some storms could produce wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph, strong enough to knock down small branches and create hazardous driving conditions, especially along U.S. 70 and Highway 17.

Ahead of the front, temperatures surge into the mid to upper 80s across inland communities including Kinston, Greenville, and Jacksonville. Once the front passes, temperatures will drop quickly through the afternoon, creating a noticeable shift by the evening commute.

Coastal areas such as Morehead City and the Outer Banks may see slightly lower storm intensity but still face gusty winds and brief downpours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions during the afternoon hours.

Storm activity tapers off after sunset, but cooler and more stable air settles in overnight. Additional updates are expected if stronger storms develop along the front later today.
