North Carolina’s coastal air already feels thick and tropical near Wilmington as towering clouds build inland from the Atlantic and pavement dries slowly from earlier showers. Drivers near Market Street and stretches of I-40 may encounter sudden downpours later today as another round of thunderstorms develops during the afternoon heat.

According to the National Weather Service, Wilmington faces daily storm chances through at least Friday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s by midweek. Rain chances stay elevated each afternoon, ranging from 50% to 70%, while gusts could reach 18 mph near stronger storms. Brief heavy rainfall may produce standing water on low-lying roads around New Hanover and Brunswick counties.

Beach communities from Carolina Beach to Wrightsville Beach could also see lightning delays and quick-moving storms during peak afternoon hours. Humidity remains unusually high for late May, with dew points holding in the low 70s and heat index values nearing 90 degrees by Wednesday.

The broader weather setup across the Southeast remains active as Gulf moisture feeds a slow-moving frontal boundary stretching across much of the eastern United States. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms may still produce gusty winds, small hail and localized flooding where heavier rain repeatedly develops.

Conditions stay warm and unsettled through the second half of the week. Residents heading outdoors for beach trips, cookouts or boating plans should keep weather alerts enabled and prepare for fast-changing skies each afternoon.
