Omaha, Nebraska – Dangerously cold air is expected to overspread eastern Nebraska late this week, with wind chills plunging well below zero and posing serious health risks through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect as the coldest air of the season arrives Thursday night and persists through Sunday morning. Forecast wind chills are expected to drop to -20°F to -30°F Friday morning, improve only slightly to -15°F to -25°F Saturday morning, and remain dangerously cold at -10°F to -20°F Sunday morning.
Forecasters note that strong winds on Wednesday, with gusts up to 45 mph, will usher in the Arctic air mass. The NWS emphasized that updated terminology now focuses on dangerously cold air itself, not just wind, meaning life-threatening conditions are possible even when winds are lighter.
Primary hazards include frostbite on exposed skin, which can occur in minutes, and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Officials also warn of potential burst pipes, difficulty starting vehicles, and increased strain on heating systems during the cold stretch.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Those responsible for pets and livestock should ensure adequate shelter from the cold. Young workers, students, and commuters traveling during early morning hours should plan for extreme cold conditions.
The National Weather Service advises monitoring forecast updates, as the Extreme Cold Watch could be upgraded to a Warning as confidence increases.
