Glasgow, MT – Boaters and outdoor enthusiasts across eastern Montana are being urged to prepare for hazardous conditions Friday as strong winds are forecast to impact area lakes.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26. The advisory covers Phillips, Valley, Garfield, McCone, and Petroleum counties, including Fort Peck Lake, Malta, Jordan, Circle, and surrounding areas.
Forecasters said northwest winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are expected. Wave heights could reach 4 feet, creating dangerous conditions for small craft.
The NWS cautioned that strong winds and rough waves can easily overturn smaller boats. Residents planning to fish, boat, or recreate on Fort Peck Lake are advised to exercise caution or postpone trips until conditions improve.
The advisory highlights the potential for hazardous boating weather but does not include other land-based impacts. Motorists and residents should still expect blustery conditions across open areas.
