Pikeville, Ky. – Snow showers will continue to sweep across the mountains of eastern Kentucky through Monday, creating slick and slushy roads that could quickly change conditions over short distances.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for Harlan, Floyd, Knott, Perry, Letcher, Martin and Pike counties, along with Bell and Leslie counties. Most areas can expect an additional half inch to 2 inches of snow, with locally higher totals under persistent bands. Elevations above 3,000 feet could see up to 4 inches.
Communities including Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Hazard, Whitesburg and Harlan may experience bursts of snow that briefly coat roadways. U.S. 23, U.S. 119 and KY 80 could become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses where untreated surfaces freeze first.
Bell and Leslie counties, including Middlesboro and Hyden, may see a dusting to 1 inch, but isolated heavier pockets remain possible.
Both the Monday morning and evening commutes could be affected. Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time and check GoKY.ky.gov for updated road conditions. Snow showers will taper Monday evening, but patchy icy spots may linger into the night.
