JACKSON, Ky. – A crisp fall chill will settle over eastern Kentucky late tonight, bringing the season’s first frost risk to much of the region by early Thursday morning. Temperatures are expected to dip to near freezing, especially in sheltered valleys.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Thursday for most of eastern Kentucky, including London, Hazard, Jackson, Pikeville, and Harlan. Temperatures near 32°F will lead to patchy frost formation before sunrise, with a more widespread frost event expected again early Friday as skies remain clear and winds stay light.
Sensitive outdoor vegetation may be damaged or killed if left unprotected. The NWS urges residents to cover plants, bring potted flowers inside, and disconnect outdoor hoses. According to Kentucky Emergency Management, low-lying communities along the Hal Rogers Parkway, U.S. 23, and I-75 corridors will be most prone to early morning frost.
Drivers should also prepare for frosted windshields and patchy fog around daybreak Thursday. Sunshine will return quickly by midmorning, leading to a cool but pleasant afternoon. Another round of chilly mornings is likely into the weekend before slightly milder air moves in early next week.
