Jackson, Kentucky – Torrential rain and thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across much of eastern Kentucky today, with the greatest threat arriving this afternoon and continuing into tonight.
According to the US National Weather Service in Jackson, some storms may bring gusty winds and heavy downpours, raising the potential for small stream and urban flooding across the region. Flash flood watches remain in effect through Friday evening as saturated ground increases runoff risks.
Communities in and around Pikeville, Hazard, and Morehead could experience brief road closures or dangerous travel conditions, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways and follow the NWS warning: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Localized rainfall totals may exceed 2 inches in some spots, especially along the Appalachian foothills. This marks one of the season’s first widespread excessive rainfall events and comes as creeks and rivers are already running high from earlier storms this week.
Storms are expected to taper off late tonight, but additional advisories may be issued if new cells develop. Residents should monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
