Lubbock, Texas – Giant hailstones as large as DVDs could hammer parts of West Texas this afternoon as severe storms erupt across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, strong thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Caprock and Rolling Plains by late afternoon. Hazards include DVD-sized hail, damaging winds over 70 mph, heavy rain, and possible EF2+ tornadoes. Storms will expand and intensify into a large overnight complex, increasing the risk for flash flooding.

Lubbock, Plainview, Childress, and Post are in an enhanced risk zone for giant hail and destructive winds. Vehicles should be moved to covered parking, and outdoor structures or equipment secured ahead of the storms.

Residents should prepare for flash flooding overnight, particularly in low-lying areas with poor drainage. Power outages and road closures are possible by early Saturday.

Today’s severe setup is similar to Thursday’s storms—but potentially more intense, forecasters say. The flash flood risk will peak overnight as storms stall and dump heavy rainfall. Weather alerts remain in effect through early Saturday, and additional warnings may be issued this evening.
