Cities like Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Davenport are already seeing impacts, with frequent lightning and winds topping 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, embedded thunderstorms are lifting northward, bringing widespread rain and potential for gusty winds between 30 to 45 mph. Rainfall rates may reach up to 0.75 inches per hour, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas, increasing the risk of minor street flooding.
In Iowa, counties including Johnson, Linn, and Scott should prepare for reduced visibility and slippery roads. In Illinois, residents of Rock Island, Henry, and Whiteside counties may face similar hazards, particularly along I-80 and Route 6.
Drivers are urged to slow down and watch for pooling water on roads. Light objects like trash bins or patio furniture should be secured, as winds could displace them overnight. Charge devices in case of brief outages and avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest rain bands.
