Seattle, Washington – While cities from Washington, D.C., to Boston brace for triple-digit heat index values this weekend, higher elevations in the Pacific Northwest are preparing for something much chillier: potential June snowfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a cooler weather pattern will move into western Washington Friday through Saturday, dropping snow levels to near 5,000 feet—a rare event for mid-June. Light snow accumulation or a rain/snow mix is possible over the Cascades, especially from Friday afternoon into midday Saturday.

The contrasting conditions across the U.S. are stark. On the East Coast, dangerous humidity and soaring temperatures could push “feels like” values above 105°F, prompting excessive heat warnings and increased risks of heat-related illness. Meanwhile, hikers and campers near Mount Rainier or Stevens Pass may need cold-weather gear.

“If you’re heading to the mountains this weekend, plan for wintry conditions above 5,000 feet,” the NWS advised. “Monitor the latest forecasts and let someone know your itinerary.”

While snowfall is expected to remain light, the timing and elevation could still impact high-country travel and outdoor recreation—underscoring the unusual range of weather extremes unfolding across the nation.
