East Chicago, IN – Police apprehended an East Chicago man wanted for multiple arson and stalking charges following an intense pursuit on Monday.
According to the East Chicago Police Department, officers initially responded to a car fire on October 24 on Northcote Avenue. Witnesses reported seeing a suspect set the car ablaze before fleeing. Days later, on October 28, police responded to a second incident at the same location, where witnesses observed the same individual allegedly setting a house on fire. The investigation identified 18-year-old Michael G. Medrano as the suspect, accused of stalking and harassing his ex-girlfriend.
Detective D. Saliga filed 17 criminal charges against Medrano, including felony arson, intimidation, and domestic battery. After Medrano allegedly taunted detectives on social media, officers from the Gang and Narcotics Division tracked him down. Detectives Garcia and Sanchez located him on the city’s south side, where he attempted to flee. Following a brief chase, police took Medrano into custody without further incident.
Medrano remains detained pending transfer to the Lake County Jail. Chief Jose Rivera credited his team’s dedication in capturing Medrano.
