Tiptonville, TN – A minor earthquake shook the tri-state border of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri late Sunday night. The 2.7-magnitude tremor struck just northwest of Tiptonville, Tennessee, near the Mississippi River and Reelfoot Lake State Park.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 3:07 a.m. at a depth of 9.2 kilometers. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 6 kilometers northwest of Tiptonville, a region known for seismic activity along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. While no significant damage or injuries were reported, residents in the area felt light tremors.

The region, historically tied to the New Madrid fault, has experienced notable earthquakes in the past, including major quakes in the 19th century. Reelfoot Lake, a natural landmark formed by these earthquakes, lies close to Sunday’s tremor.

According to local emergency management, reports of shaking came from towns along the Mississippi River, where Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky converge. Some residents reported hearing a low rumble followed by a brief shake. Though the tremor was minor, officials are reminding residents to stay aware of the area’s ongoing seismic risks.

The Mississippi River and Reelfoot Lake sit in one of the most seismically active zones in the eastern U.S., with occasional tremors reminding residents of the region’s geological history.

Residents are encouraged to report any earthquake activity they experienced to the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in ongoing monitoring efforts. Emergency officials recommend that locals remain prepared for possible future seismic events.
